SEARCHING THE RECORDS
Merrimack County was Incorporated in 1823. The Registry of Deeds has records dating back to 1823 and earlier. There are 25 Towns and 2 Cities in Merrimack County:
What you need to know to find what you are looking for:
All of the records in the Registry of Deeds are by name and date. You must have at least a last name and a rough idea of the transaction date to find information in the records
of this office.
If you only have a street location or a map and lot number, you must contact the Town or City Assessor/Tax Collector to obtain the owner's name of the particular parcel that
you are looking for.
This applies to locating deeds as well as surveys of the property.
If you know the name of the parties involved in selling a piece of property, you would look in the Grantor index under their name during the time frame that you believe the
transaction took place.
If you know the name of the parties involved in the purchase of a piece of property, you would look in the Grantee index under their name during the time frame that you
believe the transaction took place.
If you are looking for a survey (plan) on a piece of property, the plan index lists all plans filed by the owner's name, subdivision name, development name and in some cases will
list the abutters of property that has been surveyed.

If you are using the records to trace back to the original owners of your property, the following is intended to make that search easier:
If you start with your deed, locate it by looking in the Grantee index under your name around the time frame that you purchased the property. You will locate a book and page
number in the index which will refer you to the document. Use the computer to view the document. Some books and microfilm are also available for viewing if needed. In the
body of the deed you will find a meaning and intending clause which typically recites the previous owners of the property and quite often recites a book and page number of that
transaction.
Keep following the chain of title back using the book and page numbers of each previous deed. If the meaning and intending clause only gives you names and a date, you will
need to use the index to find the previous owner. If you take the current owner (Grantor) of that transaction and use their name to search the Grantee index in the prior years to
the date of that transaction, you should find the previous conveyance.
When using the index, you may see &al or &als listed after the given name of the individual, this means that there is more than one party to the transaction.
Please note that sometimes you may need to visit the Registry of Probate if the property has been obtained through the estate of any person.
If the property was obtained through a will, there may not be a deed to the property. The will sometimes takes the place of the deed. Consult an attorney with any questions
regarding this.
The Registry of Probate is located on the second floor of the Merrimack County Administration Building, just above the Registry of Deeds.
